What to Expect

COUNSELING PROCESS

For those who've never experienced a therapy session, there's often curiosity about what to expect. Will the therapist delve into your emotions? Will they prompt discussions about your fears? Might they probe into your childhood?

Upon initial inquiry or engagement, you will receive a simple form to fill out and return to us. If you feel uncomfortable answering any of the questions on paper, you can wait until the first scheduled appointment to address them.

We will review your information and set up an appointment at your convenience, typically lasting 60 minutes. Knowing what to expect during your first session can help you feel more comfortable and informed.

Your First Session

Introductions: Much of the first session revolves around getting acquainted. Establishing a personal connection with your therapist is crucial—it sets the tone for effective communication.

Identifying Needs: Your therapist will want to understand why you're seeking therapy and what issues you hope to address. They'll inquire about your mental health history, previous coping strategies, and treatment goals to tailor their approach accordingly.

Your Questions: It's beneficial to prepare questions for your therapist too. Reflect on any concerns or uncertainties you have about therapy.

Future Sessions

Length of Therapy: Depending on your issues and therapy goals, therapy can last a few sessions or several weeks. While you might want to know how long it will take to "feel better," there is no simple answer—it’s highly individualized.

Therapy Methods: Therapists use a variety of techniques to help you better cope with mental illness, resolve personal issues, and create positive changes in your life. Understanding the techniques your therapist will use can give you a better idea of what to expect in future sessions.

Homework: You may receive "homework" from your therapist—a task to complete before your next session. This could involve journaling or reading materials related to your therapy. Remember, this work is about your well-being, not achieving perfection.

The Counseling Journey

Counseling is a journey, and your therapist will develop a personalized plan based on their observations and your feedback. Each individual will receive a customized plan tailored to their unique needs. Before your session concludes, you will discuss and confirm the date and time for your next appointment.
